Modeselektor Presents Their Backstage Tristesse

Delivered... Slices Magazine | Scene | Tue 21 Apr 2015 11:00 am

Modeselektor founder Sebastian Szary’s book Backstage Tristesse offered a glimpse into the mysterious world of touring with 100 photos taken in backstage areas around the world during Moderat’s 2014 world tour. The lonely, unspectacular, and often hilariously absurd spaces represent the unadorned parts of the touring musician’s highly coveted lifestyle, and the pictures inspired Electronic Beats TV to launch a new Slices series, Backstage Tristesse. Over the course of the year, we’ll discover what the moments before and after a show are really like as some of our favorite Slices alumni and new faces alike guide us through their behind-the-scenes woes in a manner that’s as DIY as some of the furniture set up backstage. For the inaugural installment, we decided it was only fitting to have the author of the series’ namesake tell us about some of the most poignant points from his most recent tour. We hope you survive life on the road.

Slices Does Word/Play With Anja Schneider

Delivered... Slices Magazine | Scene | Tue 7 Apr 2015 11:01 am

It’s time for some fun with Slices Word/Play on Electronic Beats TV. This round stars owner, DJ, producer and “perpetual motion machine” Anja Schneider.

Running the Mobilee label and a long-standing weekly radio show on Berlin’s Radio Fritz, Dance Under the Blue Moon, would be plenty of work for most, but it’s no problem for Anja, whose unrelenting work ethic has produced a solid catalog of solo productions, remixes for the likes of Pan-Pot, H.O.S.H. and Kiki, as well as collaborations with Sebo K and Lee van Dowski. We thought it was time for Anja to relax and play a little game with us.

Delivered... Slices Magazine | Scene | Tue 31 Mar 2015 11:00 am

Slices goes for a ride with FJAAK, who just signed to the prestigious 50Weapons label.

Meet FJAAK, the stars of this Slices New Faces feature on Electronic Beats TV. This young and wild trio of Berlin natives are now fully fledged members of the 50Weapons family and personify vibrancy and energy in their raw techno productions and insane live shows. Their close-knit childhood friendship means they hardly leave each others sides and is the basis of a deep musical understanding which is done on their terms. With their debut album in the pipe, we look forward to what’s next for these lads.

Slices Tours the Studio in KiNK’s Mom’s House

Electronic Beats TV goes to KiNK country in this Slices feature.

The native Bulgarian born Strahil Velchev gave us a close-up view into his home life and studio in Sofia, which happens to be located in his mother’s house. With a heavy touring schedule and constant stream of releases on labels like Macro, Rush Hour and Running Back, plus remixes for the likes of Matthew Dear, Deetron and Nina Kraviz, it’s hard to know how he found the time—not that we’re complaining. A favorite of both the crowd on the dance floor and those controlling it, this lover of technology and modular synth enthusiast continues to take risks through his booming productions and hybrid live set-up.

Slices Catches Up With Funkstörung

Delivered... Slices Magazine | Scene | Tue 10 Mar 2015 12:00 pm

After 10 years of separation, Funkstörung are back in business and Electronic Beats TV has the scoop!

This is a particularly notable reunion, not only because it coincides with the 10th anniversary of Slices, but also because Chris De Luca and Michael Fakesch were the very first artists filmed in the series. Over the course of numerous EPs and albums, not to mention remixes for the likes of Jean-Michel Jarre, Björk, A Guy Called Gerald and Wu-Tang Clan, Funkstörung has developed a trademark sound that combines syncopated rhythms with spaciously constructed sounds. On their new album, which is set for release on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown label, De Luca and Fakesch display musical progression while maintaining their signature style.

Slices Tours Stimming’s Studio for a Tech Talk

Watch as the technically astute and highly organised producer Martin Stimming gives Electronic Beats TV a tour of his audio gear in this Slices Tech Talk. His set-up is based around Cubase and various analogue processors and synthesisers. Stimming’s textural and ardent productions and live shows have impressed audiences since he joined Solomun’s Diynamic family in 2007. In addition to his home label, Stimming also found his way onto stalwart imprints like Pampa, Freerange, and Poker Flat, and has constructed remixes for the likes of Wankelmut, Ian Pooley, Deadmau5, and Claude VonStroke.

“The most important thing is that the people are having a good time, and that you are part of it and not the preacher or the dictator who tells them what to do. It is a cooperation”.

Watch a ten minute interview with Berlin-based Italian Filippo Moscatello, aka FNM, a producer who’s released music on Moodmusic, Eskimo, K7! and, perhaps most famously, International Deejay Gigolos. Steffi (Slices DVD Feature)

Have you been on a boat with a DJ? If not, you’re not alone. We also tend to know most DJs and producers from behind a club’s turntables during long party nights—not so much during daytime.

For Electronic Beats Slices DVD 3-12, the Slices team and Berlin-based producer Steffi met up at Müggelsee, a lake in the eastern suburbs of Berlin. During the afternoon video shoot on a float, Steffi opened up on her production techniques and philosophy, her residency at Berghain’s Panorama Bar, and her Detroit/Chicago techno-driven sound aesthetics.

Lusine (Slices DVD Feature)

Seattle-based producer Jeff McIlwain may be associated within a musical niche, but his productions under his moniker Lusine reach out far into the world of pop music. Following up on his album A Certain Distance from (2009) is his third longplayer titled The Waiting Room, which will be released on Canadian imprint Ghostly International in 2013.

If I’m just experimenting just for the sake of experiment, it’s not worth for me”, said McIlwain in our Slices video feature. “If you’re doing something different with pop music, then this may be more experimental than covering the same territory that other artists covered with ‘experimental music’.”

Alexander Robotnick (Slices DVD Feature)

Maurizio Dami is one of those producers that can honestly say “Been there, done that”. The Italian musician has been releasing music since the ’80s under his moniker Alexander Robotnick, and his cult track “Problèmes D’Amour” helped shape the sound of house music and Italo disco.

“(In the past days of music production) you couldn’t change everything later,” Robotnick explains in our Slices Magazine DVD feature from 2009. “You needed a clear idea about your work—once it was recorded, it was recorded, no chance to change it.”

Watch Alexander Robotnick’s Slices video feature, taken from Slices Issue 1-09. Find even more Slices features and live videos over at our Youtube Channel, or buy the DVD.
