We Know The Feeling: Christina Duran (Beatport Denver)

Delivered... Posted by beatportsean | Scene | Mon 6 Sep 2010 3:55 pm
Beatport is a crazy place. I don’t want to start an ego massage at the risk of turning this place into a day spa, but the creative types are bountiful within these walls. It seems like most everyone around here not only has loads of talent, but also a unique passion. One such representative of our staff is Christina Duran. She’s a spicy, pint-sized package with main stage talents. Remember Superman? Piss-poor reporter, but a hell of a crime fighter… Well, Christina got both of her grounds covered solidly; an integral part of the Beatport system by day and captivating crowd rocker by night. We had to wait until Christina slowed to a blur to hit her up for ‘We Know The Feeling’ and here (finally) are the results.

Peter Hook’s Hacienda memoirs turns into boxset

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Mon 6 Sep 2010 2:17 pm

Celebrated co-founder of New Order and Joy Division, Peter Hook released his critically acclaimed memoirs in 2009 titled The Haçienda: How Not To Run A Club. The memoirs detailed his sordid life as a rock star and the demise of his finances.

Well, now these memoirs will be getting the boxset treatment, with only a few hundred copies of it being made available. Inside it you’ll find signed sections of the book accompanied by unpublished material. It also houses a 10" record with one of Peter Hook’s new tunes, ‘The Viking’.

The design for the boxset has been the job of English designers Foruli who with the help of Hook completed it with a special art print.

We all knew this was going to be highly prized and limited so here are the details:

There are only 400 available of the standard edition which retail at £300.

100 copies of the deluxe at £600 which can you believe contains an actual piece of the Hacienda bar top.

Finally there are two ultimate editions available, which include one of only six handmade custom FAC51 Hacienda bass guitars.

At the height of Hook’s fame during the Hacienda days, the band were throwing all their royalties into the running of the club with only £20 left for each of the band at the end of the week. It really does seem like someone is still in need of some cash.

You can buy these beautiful boxsets right here.

First Impressions: The Concretes, “WYWH”

The Concretes
WYWH
Friendly Fire Recordings
Release Date: November 8

Tracklist:

01. Good Evening
02. My Ways
03. Crack In The Paint
04. I Wish We’d Never Met
05. All Day
06. What We’ve Become
07. Oh My Love
08. Knck Knck
09. Sing For Me
10. WYWH

First Impressions:

-It’s been a busy three years since Swedish band The Concretes released its last album stateside. Lisa Milberg has replaced founding member Victoria Bergsman as the group's frontwoman and the band has signed with a new label, Friendly Fire. And on top of that, it has a new sound, to boot.

-The album begins with “Good Evening,” which shows a change from the band’s former indie-pop vibe. This is a darker, German influenced disco tune with a loungy vibe. Synths and bass are prominently featured throughout and Milberg’s vocals are on-point. “Good Evening” sets the tone for how the rest of the album sounds.

-“All Day” is an uptempo track that would fit in perfectly at any of the W Hotel’s swanky bars. The song has a loungy vibe meshed with an element of Euro-pop.

Key Tracks:

“My Ways,” “What We’ve Become,” “Oh My Love.”

Predictions:

The band’s brand of indie-pop takes a dark turn on this album. With heavier synth beats and a thumpier bass, though retaining simplistic melodies, The Concretes has evolved into the next phase of its career, which includes a new disco-influenced sound.

The Cult of the Narcissist Hip-Hop star

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Mon 6 Sep 2010 12:07 pm

So, just when you thought the craze of the narcissistic hip hop star really had reached a peak, what with Kanye’s recent Twitter/Facebook appearances and of course not forgetting the epochal Kanye blunder; Taylor Swift Gate, it seems the cult has reached a new peak.

Cue The Greatness and Pharrell Williams, some times lovable gent.

The Greatness is an up and coming project from Paris and Shanghai based creative agency Yi Zhou which follows on from their 2009 video, The Ear. The aptly titled sculpture come vase (of all things!) is a 3D creation which recreates the face of Pharrell Williams inspired by surrealist masks and Greek-style urns.

The vase is accompanied by a visual piece that completes the project; the films premise follows the progression and eventual degradation of the vase to represent death. Lastly, Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone lends a special sound of mystery to the project by scoring the short film.

The Greatness is part of the “I AM YOUR SIMULACRUM” exhibition. It will take place at 20 Hoxton Square Projects, London from September 2nd.

Benji B to replace Mary Anne Hobbs on Radio 1

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Mon 6 Sep 2010 10:03 am

One DJ goes out and one DJ comes in. Yes, news has arrived that BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Benji B will be replacing Mary Anne Hobbs for her coveted 2am – 4am slot. Hobbs who has been in the driving seat for the Radio 1 early morning slot for 14 years announced last month that she will be leaving in order to take on a teaching position in Sheffield.

Hobbs will be posting her final radio call on September 8th, with Benji moving in on October 14th.

Benji said of the new appointment, "I’ve loved my eight years at 1Xtra and am delighted to be given this incredible opportunity.I can’t wait to bring the essence of my Sunday night show and my loyal audience to my new Radio 1 programme."

It will be somewhat interesting to see how Benji fills Hobbs rather large shoes as Benji B tends to play more house, hip hop and beats as opposed to Hobbs darker experimental tendencies.

Ben Cooper, deputy controller of BBC Radio 1, said, "I’m excited about him (Benji B) being able to put his own mark on the slot by bringing some of the finest cutting edge dub step and experimental electronica to our audiences."

Hobbs will continue to DJ and also work with curating the Sonar festival.
