Just minutes before Flying Lotus took the stage Sunday night at NYC’s Terminal 5, a question was humming around the venue: which FlyLo would we see tonight?

Would it be the electro-jazz experimentalist accompanied by a backing band (including Brainfeeder label mate Thundercat)? Or perhaps the genre-bending hip-hop DJ whose solo performances and brand of electronic music has helped redefine the L.A. electronic music scene.



Performing behind a large projection screen replete with a cosmic laser-light show spinning throughout, the enigmatic musical futurist commonly known as “FlyLo” delivered a high-intensity concert on the second day of his nearly-week-long NYC residency. The sold-out venue packed to the brim with 3,000 concertgoers waiting to hear tracks off the highly anticipated new album, Until the Quiet Comes;  one might assume that FlyLo has begun a new phase of his musical legacy.



Throughout the set, FlyLo displayed a deftness to create his own musical universe by meshing current rap classics with his own songs. This delicate balance between the original and the borrowed -- and the melodic and the dissonant -- is what Flying Lotus has come to be known for.

Some might disapprove of a musician who incorporates songs borrowed from his peers into live performances, but we must understand FlyLo is studio rat and the intentions of his live performances are to give fans an unparalleled fun experience. With this in mind, FlyLo’s live track selection has become somewhat of an element of surprise during his performances. Fans have come to expect remixes of Lil Wayne’s “I Feel Like Dying,” Radiohead’s “Idioteque” and most recently, Frank Ocean’s “Thinking of You,” which were reworked, mutated and integrated with his own tracks, including “Kill Your Coworkers,” “Pie Face,” “GNG BNG” and “Camel”.

From the side of the stage, I spotted a certain individual donning the infamous “J Dilla Changed My Life,” T-shirt (a reference to the late legendary hip-hop producer whom FlyLo has often cited as a major musical influence). This individual was none other than Story Basquiat, the Brooklyn-based contortionist dancer who appeared in FlyLo’s stunning promotional video for “Until the Quiet Comes.” Taking fans by surprise, Story Basquiat undulated onto the stage for a live dance performance during a rendition of the gorgeous “Getting There”  from the new album.

Following the set, I sauntered my way through the steamy crowd outside the venue, hoping to have a few minutes to myself to process the musical universe I had just exited. Hopefully I won’t have to wait much longer until the quiet comes…F

At MusicMakers, Experiencing Music Through Design, As Community of Doers Collaborates [Listen, Watch]

Making connections with people – creators and audience alike – sometimes means going beyond the virtual, and actually getting people together in the same room. For MusicMakers, Create Digital Music teamed up with curators and artists in Berlin to make some of those connections across disciplines, to get closer to the processes of design and music creation. Making and listening in the age of overabundance could feel diluted. But as makers keep making, and really listening, they can find their music comes to mean more, not less.

With support from Moog Music, on the 14th of September we launched our first event, in the heart of Berlin’s creative scene, at the formerly-a-swimming-pool Kreuzberg club Prince Charles. Now, we can share what happened, and some of the people we’ve gotten to know – and where it might lead next.

Mixing club events with art or exhibition is nothing new. But “nothing new” is part of the idea. It seems to me that there’s an opportunity in this moment to bring together people who make things via a variety of techniques, both traditional and new, digital media but also old media – analog, wood, paper. We can create a new environment for audiences to have a broader experience of music and its resonance in other media, and a space in which these artists can connect their techniques to one another. For those of us who believe in growing through connections to others, whatever the result, that environment is a necessity.

MusicMakers actually began in March 2007, as part of a collaboration between myself, Make Magazine, and Etsy (and hosted by Etsy at their Brooklyn offices). It later evolved into something we called Handmade Music, and people have picked up on the idea of bringing musical DIYers together in cities worldwide. For the Berlin relaunch, though, I wanted to come back to the original name, because for me it gets at the broader sense of creation.

The team behind MusicMakers brought together CDM with creative organizations SemiDomesticated (curator Anette K Hansen) and PLATform (curators Alex Sebag, Iohanna Nicenboim, and Raquel Chaves). We also worked on a new visualization of musical patterns in Organized Sound: The Synthesizer, Visualized, a collaboration between myself, Hansen, and Caroline Blind that resulted in the hand-printed artwork you see here. (More on that in a separate story.)

We got to work with a range of musicians, from a synth jam with a Berghain resident to a Dutch duo, playing everything from a Sarod to hand-built electronics to analog modulars. And with our curators, we found designs ranging from an electroacoustic bass kalimba built by a furniture designer to hands-on interactive RFID installation.

To start sharing what we did do in the real world (meatspace?) with the rest of the planet (non-Berlin-space, which frankly often has better weather), here’s an introduction to the artists we got to know at the event.

We do want to hear from you. If an artist strikes your fancy (installation or live act) and you’d like to know more, we’ll be doing additional coverage, so don’t be shy.

Takeshi Nishimoto

Composer and guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto is known for collaborative electronic projects such as “I’m Not A Gun” with John Tejada, as well as solo work. Among his diverse output, here’s an illustrative collaboration with Strand:

This massed set of artists and vintage gear produced strikingly-crisp dance music in real-time, to visualizations of MIDI events by myself (collaborating with designers Anette K Hansen and Caroline Blind). We called it the “Megajam” – they had never played before, but I loved what happened when they came together. I hope to document this band separately, but in the meantime, I’ll give you a taste of just one artist – Sam Barker, who works now on a duo with nd_baumecker we’ve covered here on CDM.

Sneak-Thief

We’ll be seeing more of Michel’s work soon, but suffice to say, Sneak-Thief is one of the craziest hardware builders I’ve met, and… well, you read this site. More on his sequencing monster later this month.

Lando Kal

Lando Kal is perhaps best known as part of Lazer Sword, but his solo act is deserving of attention. He held down an extended live set and a prominent role in The Megajam. I hope we get closer with Antaeus and his work shortly, but in the meantime, it appears he just posted this to SoundCloud, so let’s have a listen, shall we?

Our installation artists included two instruments the audience could play: an amplified bass marímbula made from a garden rake by designers Pastperfekt, and the futuristic AirPiano (above) with visualizations by Florian Schulz. They also included shimmering and responsive audiovisual installations by Kasper Vang and Kasper Vang, and a giant, lumbering stuffed object that used RFIDs to trigger musical playback in a shining array of CDs (seen at the beginning of the video) by artists Birgitta Cappelen and Fredrik Olofsson (MusicalFieldsForever).

multicult.fm stands for a respectful and integrative approach towards the diversity of this region.

Among ourselves, we communicate in various languages. We cover countries from Korea to Croatia, from Brazil to Belgium, from Sri Lanka to Zimbabwe. German is our Lingua Franca.

Media shape the public perception. This is true as well for the question of migration and integration of immigrants, and has been acknowledged in the German gouvernement's "Nationaler Integrationsplan" 2007. Berlin-Brandenburg is a vibrant metropolis and fast-growing media hub. It needs a multicultural medium that caters to all ethnic groups and helps to build connections among them. The programme of radio multicult.fm reflects the diversity of this region.

Besides encouraging the integration of migrants and post-migrants, we work to promote a greater mutual understanding among the different ethnic groups of Berlin and Brandenburg. In this area, media like radio multicult.fm are as necessary as they are trend-setting; also, because the number of journalists of foreign descent still has to improve very much in Germany.

In the future radio multicult.fm will become a 'talent-workshop' for prospective journalists in several media professions.

Our characteristic musical flavour is indispensable to Berlin-Brandenburg's media scene: World music.

When Beatport launched the new Mixes platform, we asked all our of big-name DJ buddies to get on board. Globally recognized names such as Diplo, Paul Van Dyk, and Booka Shade all jumped at the chance to start selling their mixes through our store, however, little did we expect that a couple of Australian party kids who go by the name F*** It! would have submitted what was to become one of the biggest-selling mixes so far this year.

King Britt’s next album is one that explores a sonic future – and now it has its own future, too. At a time when music may seem disposable, this is a limited release that will literally blossom when discarded, with seed paper that you can plant. CDM is exclusively hosting the streaming debut of The Bee and the Stamen next week, which calls for a brief preview here to kick off discussion of the intersection of nature and electronic sound. (See the rehearsal vid, complete with monome, Maschine, KAOSS Pad QUAD.)

Technology may seem synthetic – hence the derogative “synthesizer” – but King’s release is part of a growing scene of music that explores the connection with the environment. (And not just by pretending to juice walnut essence, as we saw earlier this week.)

This weekend, a huge swath of artists cluster in Philadelphia (at America’s oldest-surviving botanical garden, no less) – for just some examples of what’s happening.

“Organic” is the word I’d use for King’s approach to music making, too. It’s tough to really get a feel in a few short minutes of online video, but the rehearsal footage here at top gives you a taste. Keeping sounds un-quantized and under the fingertips means the ability to really improvise live, not only composing but playing parts as percussion – and thus to need that rehearsal. This should be nothing new to this site; the idea is that artists can spread this sort of humanized playing. Indeed, as readers in comments routinely chide this site for describing music that many people are doing, I think of that bee colony: imagine a global hive of musicians, spreading musical ideas like pollen. Maybe producers can be plentiful, not just a heroic lone wolf, but a connected colony. (Maybe my blood sugar is just low and I should eat some honey and drop this metaphor. Also possible. I’ll leave you to ponder.)

While we await the album release on Tuesday the 16th, now is a good time to see if there are things you’d like to know from King about music making, technique and composition, or reflections on bees. (More questions will surely come up after listening – well, I’d hope – but let us know the sorts of things you’d like to know as I communicate with King.) And see you next week.

INTERVIEW: Woodkid Gears Up For A Dramatic Los Angeles Debut

Chances are you have contributed to at least one of the well-over 100 million views on Katy Perry's video for "Teenage Dream." You most likely are one of the almost 46 million views on Drake and Rihanna's music video for "Take Care" as well. If for some reason you've refused to take a look at these gorgeous visuals, simply because you've been hiding under your indie rock, don’t deny that you've gasped over Lana Del Rey's sexy deaths in both "Blue Jeans" and "Born To Die,” at least once.

Though all of these videos have been viewed millions of times, only one artist was responsible for their direction: Yoann Lemoine. The French director’s hypnotizing, out-of-this-world talents extend way beyond the visual, with his experimental and theatrical musical project called Woodkid. Last March, Woodkid released a six-track EP called Iron: hard-hitting brass, percussion, string, and keys paired with gentle yet booming vocals to form the most unreal indie orchestra of sound.

Fritz Kalkbrenner talks influences and meaning behind ‘Sick Travellin’

However hard you try to not to, when writing about Fritz Kalkbrenner’s work you ultimately always have to refer back to his brother Paul. But it was due to their first collaboration on the soundtrack to the film ‘Berlin Calling’ that lead to the major hit, Sky And Sand. The track propelled Paul Kalkbrenner into the major limelight, whilst Fritz’s unique, soulful vocal became synonymous with the movie itself. Proceeding that Fritz began releasing records on Suol, a label whose audio aesthetics matched that of his own. Following the success of his debut album ‘Here Today Gone Tomorrow’, an album that combined Fritz’s love for soul, hip-hop and techno, the Berlin producer releases his second album ‘Sick Travellin’ this week. We caught up with him to get the low down behind the new album, and what steps were involved in it’s production.
